What makes The Retreat so special?

A holiday escape to The Retreat Bushland Lodge is truly a unique experience. Set among a serene and not-quite-remote bushland setting, our bush retreat is perfect for your next Hunter Valley holiday or romantic getaway. And because of its configuration, the lodge is perfect for families, honeymooners, couples or even a small group of friends. You will enjoy spectacular views over the Hunter Valley, Maitland and on a clear day across to the ocean at Newcastle, while still having the privacy and quiet that you need to have a real holiday.

Do we get The Retreat to oursleves and how private is it?

Yes, you get exclusive use of the house. The Retreat is renowned for its secluded location. If you look hard through the bush you can just see two other lodges over 100 metres away. You won't see the distant next door neighbour on one side as the bush is too thick. So it is pretty private. Mostly all you'll hear are the sounds of nature.

Do you take one night bookings?

Yes and no. You are welcome to stay only one night, but because of our location our cleaning and linen costs are significant and we’ll need to charge you for two nights to cover our costs. But we do have a one night special if not booked on Saturday night a couple can have the lodge for only $380 on a last minute basis.

How are the bedrooms configured?

The main bedroom has a queen bed and an ensuite bathroom and overlooks an expansive view of mountains, valleys and trees. The Secret Loft has two long single beds and is located well away from the main bedroom, for that extra peace and quiet for parents with children. The nearest shower and toilet is immediately below the loft. There is a long single bed in the Billiard room which has en ensuite shower and toilet. This is the best room for very young children as parents in the main bedroom can hear them from above. There are three folding beds that fit in the billiard room that suit children.

How many people can the lodge accommodate?

The Retreat is best enjoyed with a maximum of five people, with three single beds and one queen size bed. For family groups we can provide three folding beds for children but these will only fit in the billiard room.

Is the lodge self contained?

Yes, the lodge was set-up so it is completely self-contained, so you don’t have to leave the resort for your entire stay, if you wish. There is a large, fully-equipped kitchen, a laundry, and lots of indoor and outdoor activities.

Are pets allowed at The Retreat?

No, sorry. Because of the abundance of native wildlife at the resort, you will not be able to bring your pets along with you. But to get to The Retreat you drive right past Hunter Valley Cat Boarding in Paterson (02) 4938 5993. And the Lochinvar Pet Motel is just west of Maitland (02) 4930 7612. We also understand that pet accommodation can be found 14km south of Dungog for $10 per day. Phone Sue Flannery on (02) 4996 5528.

Is the lodge serviced daily?

No, we service the lodge weekly. We can arrange for more frequent cleaning at an extra charge if you wish.

Can we save money by bringing our own sleeping bags and linen?

The Retreat is serviced by a housekeeper who provides linen for all of our guests, and we do not provide discounts if you bring your own.

What do we need to bring apart from food and drinks?

We suggest that in addition to your bushwalking gear, you bring beach towels if you wish to use the resort’s swimming pool or lagoon, and bike helmets if you wish to use the push-bikes, just in case we don’t have a helmet to fit you. If you are serious tennis players you may wish to bring your own racquets and new balls, although we do provide plenty of tennis gear.

Some guests do bring a DVD or video to watch although we have over 100 movies and some children's videos. And some do bring their favourite music on CDs or iPod.

Serious mountain bikers and road cyclists have been known to bring their own bikes to The Retreat.

Are there any specials or discounts available?

We offer on-going midweek stays (Sunday afternoon to Friday morning – minimum 2 nights) for only $440 (per couple). Additionally, we offer a midweek ‘stay for three pay for two’ special (subject to availability - not available on public holidays and only during school holidays if bookings permit). So you can usually have three nights for $440 per couple midweek. There is a small charge for additional guests to cover the additional cleaning and linen charges.

We also offer discounts for families staying a few days in the school holidays. The longer you stay the cheaper it gets. You'll need to phone or email with details of when you wish to stay, for how long, and how many in your party to get a quote. We understand that it can be expensive to holiday when you have children, and we do our best to keep the total cost down by charging only nominal amounts for the extra cleaning and linen costs for additional guests over and above that we charge for a couple.

What is the check-in/out procedure at The Retreat?

We do not have a formal reception at The Retreat. We will tell you where to pick up the keys in Vacy as you are travelling through. Directions for this are provided upon confirmation of your booking. We are usually able to allow early check-in and late check-out without additional charge to ensure you get the most out of your relaxing holiday here at The Retreat Bushland Lodge.
